A collection of the animated short films nominated for the 2017 Academy Awards: a woman with a bizarre eye affliction, a sheriff haunted by a horrible accident, a onetime golden boy drinking himself to death.
It's clear what kind of message the Academy is sending when one looks at their nominees for short documentary, three of which are about immigrants and refugees, another about rescue efforts in Syria.
I would give the Oscar in a three-way tie to the Syrian-themed nominees, which offer stunningly intimate observations on the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
This year's batch of Oscar-nominated shorts, whether animated, live action or documentary, deal primarily with sadness and strife, but a handful do so sublimely.
