Escher is first introduced as a Captain of Industry, with an interest in harnessing high-technology to Policing. Then he exercises influence to save Kiera from arrest. Kiera learns he knows she is a time traveler. After viewers see Alec meet, and start to date, a beautiful young woman, Emily, they learn she was hired by Escher, to spy on Alec, and to protect his life. After Emily genuinely falls in love with Alec Escher refuses to let her quit, telling her her love for him makes her even more of an asset.After Emily is killed, Alec confronts Escher, holding him responsible for her death. Escher reveals that he has been watching over Alec all his life, that, like Kiera, he is a time traveler, and that he is Alec's father.After surprises everyone by hijacking the time-sphere, and going back one week to prevent Emily's death. Upon his arrival he casually reveals to his partner, time-traveler Matthew Kellogg, that Escher has a facility with enough banks of anti-matter to power expeditions through time, with the time-sphere, triggering Kellogg to assassinate Escher.
