Harlan Ogilvy, played marvellously by Tim Robbins in the 2005 film adaptation of H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds,' at first appears to be a protagonist and a saviour to Ray and Rachel Ferrier when they become helplessly separated from Ray's son Robbie, but soon his mental state comes into question and he becomes seen as an antagonist and a threat to their lives. He is actually an amalgamation of three original characters from the novel:1.) Ogilvy the Astronomer; only by surname.2.) The Parson; who the journalist became trapped with in the rubble of a country house beneath a crashed tripod until his demise at the hands of the Martians after a several day long descent into madness, and...3.) The Artilleryman; who suggests in the novel that humankind can only survive by digging tunnels underground. The only originality added to the character is when he becomes threatening and overbearing and how his demise comes about.
