Michael was born and raised in Kent, England, where he attended Sevenoaks Preparatory School, then later Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys. Michael was born and raised in Kent, England, where he attended Sevenoaks Preparatory School, then later Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys. The Grammar school if where he first discovered his love for drama, getting enrolled in the summer production of Guys and Dolls, whilst taking his final exams for graduation. Encouraged by his drama tutors at West Kent College, Michael auditioned and got accepted to the National Youth Theatre. Two years later, Michael attended Ipswich College of Higher Education. Not finding what he needed from the course, Michael got a break from one of the tutors there, getting a chance to work alongside a strong young company of actors including Stephen Mangan, Flora Montgomery and Jamie Glover in the Norwich Playhouse production of Hamlet, which was directed by Julian Glover. This experience would lead to Michael applying and being accepted to The Arden School of Theatre in Manchester, where he studied for three years, graduating from Drama school with a full degree. Later on that year, Michael started up Arcabre Films with his brother, Robert, and funding from the Princes Trust. Their first feature "Darkly Tripped", would lead to them showing it at Cannes, and Michael gaining writing work from the films praises.
